Choosing the right Air Compressor?

When choosing a compressor, the most important thing to consider is if the compressor is big enough for the job that you wish to use it for. If you purchase a compressor that is too small, then you will waste valuable time and valuable money.

When purchasing a compressor you should consider the following:

1. What is the maximum operating pressure that you require?

This will the determine the motor that you will need.

2. What is the maximum CFM required?

What to do? Add all the air tools that will be used at the same time. Add between 30 to 40% extra to the total that you get and that should be the compressor that you require and also run the tools at a comfortable rate.

3. Do you need the compressor to be portable or stationary?

Determine if the compressor needs to be moved around your garage/ workshop on a regular basis, or if it will be a stationary unit. With it being stationary you can have a higher horsepower and increase weight compressor, but if it needs to be moved around regularly, then the weight, size, construction, electrical components will all have to be taken into account.

4. What size of tank will be needed?

When purchasing a compressor, it is important to have the room for the compressor that you are buying. All compressors are measured in litres. If you are using the compressor for long periods, like a impact wrench or sander, a large tank size is necessary. If using the the compressor for short stinks like a brad or air nailer, then a small tank size can be used.
